Lake Forest Wins MLC Debut at Northland

The Forester men's lacrosse team played the first Midwest Lacrosse Conference game in program history on Saturday and came out on top 10-6 at Northland College.

Lake Forest freshman Bode Rubright starting the scoring at the 12:34 mark, sophomore John Casey added to the lead 69 seconds later, and freshman Jack Langworthy made it a three-goal lead six minutes into the contest.

After the Lumberjacks got on the scoreboard with two-and-a-half minutes to play in the opening period, Casey struck for the second time with 55 seconds remaining and Rubright beat the buzzer to give the Foresters a 5-1 lead going into the second quarter.

Langworthy, who assisted on Casey's second score, set up freshman Chas Dean two minutes into the second period and Casey recorded his second assist of the contest when Rubright completed a hat trick at 9:07. Dean and Rubright now have 10 goals apiece on the season.

Northland, however, scored the last three goals of the period, including two just nine seconds apart, and the Foresters' halftime lead was 7-4.

Lake Forest freshman Luke Bowers added to the visitors' three minutes into the third and Langworthy's second of the game made the score 9-4 with 9:41 to play in the quarter. Bowers and Langworthy each have six goals on the year.

The Foresters final tally of the game came from Casey, who finished off his third hat trick of the year at the 5:34 mark of the third quarter. Casey is the first player on the team to reach 20 goals this season and his man-up goal was assisted by freshman Trip Gaston, who had a pair of helper on the day and leads the squad with eight on the year.

Northland stopped the Forester run with 90 seconds to play in the third and scored the game's only goal of the final period while up a man with 8:26 to play.

Lake Forest freshman goalie Ryan Caparelli made a season-high eight saves in the contest, including five in the final period.

The victory raised the Foresters' overall record to 3-5 while Northland fell to 4-4.

Lake Forest will continue league play against the University of Dubuque next Saturday. The Parents Day game will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Mohr Field.
