Foresters Skate to 3-3 Tie, Drop Shootout at Lawrence

Box Score

The Lake Forest College men's hockey team tied host Lawrence University Saturday night. Both teams received a point in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings when they were tied at the end of regulation and the Vikings earned one more after winning what turned into a nine-round shootout.

Sophomore forward Ben Perkins factored into each of the Foresters' three scores, beginning with his sixth goal of the season just three-and-a-half minutes into the contest. He was assisted by freshman defenseman Matteas Derraugh.

Lawrence tied the score with 2:25 remaining in the opening period and the teams went to the locker room at the first intermission tied at one, despite Lake Forest's 15-7 advantage in shots on goal.

The Foresters doubled up the Vikings 16-8 in the shot column during the second stanza but a power play goal for the home team at the 2:17 mark was the period's only score.

Lake Forest freshman forward Tyler Buonopane scored his first career goal against Lawrence Friday night and netted his second almost exactly 24 hours later. Perkins and senior forward Josh Giacomin assisted Buonopane at 4:18 in the third, tying the score at two.

The Vikings regained the lead at the 9:40 mark but took a penalty 68 seconds later. The Foresters converted the power play opportunity at 11:32 on Giacomin's team-high ninth goal of the year with Perkins and junior forward Tyler Nielsen assisting.

The visitors finished regulation with a 38-26 edge in shots and added four more to the Vikings' two in the scoreless five-minute overtime period.

Lawrence went first during what was started out as a three-round shootout. Buonopane gave the Foresters the lead in round one but the home team scored and Lake Forest did not in round two. Both were unsuccessful in the third, fourth, and fifth rounds before the Vikings converted in the sixth. Senior forward Will Lebel kept the visitors alive in the sixth and freshman defenseman Hardy Wagner did the same in the seventh. The goaltenders survived the eighth and the Lawrence netminder made the game-winning save in the ninth.

The tie left Lake Forest with a 6-13-2 overall record and 4-8-2 mark in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Lawrence is now 8-9-3 overall and 6-6-2 in the league.

The Foresters will travel to Trine University next weekend and face off against the Thunder Friday night at 7:00 (ET) and Saturday afternoon at 4:00 (ET).
