Foresters Defeat Carroll to Qualify for MWC Tournament

Box Score

The Lake Forest College College men's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-0 triumph over visiting Carroll University on Sunday. The victory clinched a spot for the Foresters in next weekend's Midwest Conference Tournament. Freshman Kyle Kraus' first career goal gave the home team the two-goal advantage late in the game.

The teams played a scoreless first half that included just five shots, all by Carroll. None were on goal.

Lake Forest sophomore Jordan Hartman finally scored the game's first goal at 64:49. His fourth scroe of the season was assisted by senior Chris Haught-Thompson. Kraus then put the home team ahead by two with 13:34 to play. He was assisted by sophomores Alexi Spiratos and Mahir Mameledzija.

The Foresters out-shot Carroll 6-4 in the second half and put three shots on goal to the Pioneers' one.

Lake Forest freshman goalkeeper Ian Taylor recorded his first career shutout and lowered his goals against average in seven games this year to 0.49.

Haught-Thompson and fellow seniors Stephen Egan, Jerrold Rosema, Nelson Dorvlo, and Anthony Valsamis were honored before their final career home game.

The Foresters are now 13-2-3 overall in 2011 and finished the regular season with a conference record of 5-2-2. Lake Forest tied with Monmouth College for fourth in the MWC standings but won the goal differential tiebreaker to secure one of the four spots in the conference tournament. League champion Carroll fell to 9-7-1 overall and 8-1-0 in the MWC.

The same two teams will play again at Carroll in the conference tournament semifinals. That game will begin at 11:00 a.m.
