The Lake Forest College volleyball team started the 2010 season
with a four-set loss to visiting University of Chicago early
Wednesday evening. The Foresters then dropped a heartbreaking match
against Dominican University later that night.
The Foresters took a 16-9 lead in the first set against Chicago
before dropping 16 of the next 22 points and the set. After the
visitors posted a convincing 25-14 victory in the second set, Lake
Forest battled to a hard-fought 25-23 triumph in the third. The
home team was ahead 21-18 in the fourth set before the Maroons
closed out the match with a 7-0 run.
Lake Forest took the first two sets against Dominican, the first
by a lopsided 25-15 margin and the second 25-22. The Stars then
evened the match with a 25-17 victory in the third set and a 25-20
triumph in the fourth. The Foresters led 8-6 in the fifth and
deciding set before the visitors scored nine of the final 13 points
to claim the win.
Sophomore Megan
Trubich led Lake Forest with 23 kills in the two matches
combined and her 31 digs ranked second on the squad. Senior Deena
Blanchard led the Foresters' two setters with 38 on the evening
and classmate Mandi
Mulliner recorded a team-high 10 blocks. Freshman Tia Rupnik
tallied 45 digs.
Lake Forest will play two more again on Friday and Saturday at
the Elmhurst College Invitational. The Foresters will take on
Western New England College Friday night at 6:00 and Wheaton
College at 8:00. Lake Forest will then take on Augustana College at
10:00 Saturday morning and Trine University at 2:00 in the
afternoon.
