The Lake Forest College volleyball team defeated visiting
Illinois College 25-15, 25-21, 26-24 Friday night to raise its
overall record to 9-9 and Midwest Conference mark to 2-1. Forester
sophomore Cori Cooper led all players in the match with 11 kills
and 13 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
Fellow sophomores Megan Trubich and Moly McCloskey were next on
the team with nine and eight kills, respectively, and they combined
for a .326 hitting percentage. Senior setter Deena Blanchard
tallied 31 assists and matched Cooper's 13 digs. McCloskey led the
home team with two aces and senior mandi Mulliner with a pair of
blocks.
The first point of the match was the Foresters' only deficit in
the opening set. McClockey served five times, Cooper four, and
Blanchard and Mulliner three each as a 14-4 run that gave the home
team a 22-10 lead. After the Lady Blues scored five points in a
row, a ball handling error gave Lake Forest the serve and Cooper
and Trubich pounded out kills to close out the set.
Set two was tied 10 times, including every score between 10 and
19. Five Forester points in a row made the score 24-19 and, after a
pair of points by Illinois College, a service error finished off
the set. McCloskey's serves set up seven of the team's points,
including the decisive 5-0 run at the end.
Lake Forest trailed by as many as four points in the third set
and did not take a lead until the end. After facing set point at
24-23, the home team got the serve on an attack error and kills by
McColskey and Mulliner clinched the Forester victory. Cooper and
Mulliner had five kills apiece and Blanchard tallied 13 assists in
the set.
The Foresters will continue conference play tomorrow morning
when they host Monmouth College at 11:00. Monmouth will play again
at 1:00 p.m. against Kalamazoo College, who will then face Lake
Forest at 3:00.
