The Forester football team extended its winning streak to 11 games on Saturday with a 55-21 victory at Illinois College.
Six of Lake Forest's touchdowns came from running back
Cole Sorensen and tight end
James Jordan. Sorensen tied the game at seven on a 16-yard run with 9:25 remaining in the first quarter and put the visitors on top for good on a 3-yarder a little more than two minutes later. He added his first career receiving score from 21 yards out to give the Foresters a 21-7 lead after one quarter of play.
The touchdown pass to Sorensen was one of five thrown by
Ethan Springer, who then connected on a 35-yarder to Layton Ducnan early in the second quarter. Forester kicker
Hudson Schambach added a pair of field goals, one from 32 yards and the other from 42 on the final play of the half, to make it a 34-7 game at halftime.
Both teams reached the end zone twice in the third quarter. Jordan answered the Blueboys' first of the period with a 3-yard touchdown catch and the second with a 16-yarder. He also caught a pass over the middle, broke a tackle, and scored from 35 yards out in the fourth.
The Forester defense stiffened after allowing two touchdowns in the third. A sack by linemen
Ben Jones and
Taurean Hall on fourth down ended the Blueboys' next drive and an
Evan Vernon interception on the following possession was the first turnover of the contest. Linebacker
Joseph Okoh picked up a fumble forced by linebacker
Blake Ware and the home team's final drive was thwarted by the eighth career interception by safety
Thomas DeChesaro.
Lake Forest's return game was also a factor on Saturday with
Jeramichael Hernandez bringing back three kickoffs a total of 131 yards. His 54-yard return set up the visitors' first score and a 63-yarder helped answer the Blueboys final touchdown.
The Foresters improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Midwest Conference play while Illinois College fell to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Lake Forest will host Lawrence University for Homecoming next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
