This DIII Week, Lake Forest College is proud to be a part of the 15-year partnership between Special Olympics and NCAA Division III.
Lake Forest College has hosted Special Olympics swimming activities on campus, providing athletes with an opportunity to compete and train in a supportive environment while connecting with Forester student-athletes. Katie McFadden, the Assistant Director of Sports & Competition for the region, could only describe the partnership with one word: "phenomenal."Â Â Katie went on to say, "There aren't many places that offer the kind of amenities and support that Lake Forest provides."
This year's event reflected the strength of that partnership. With the help of Lake Forest's facilities and volunteers, the event created a positive experience for everyone involved. Looking toward the future, there are high hopes to continue expanding the partnership. In addition to the continuation of hosting swimming events, Katie mentioned that she would love to have Lake Forest College athletes get involved in other ways.
For many in the organization, the mission of Special Olympics is a personal one. Katie shared that her own brother competed as a Special Olympics athlete, which gave her a connection that she could not put into words. That feeling is reflected in the response from the athletes who participated in the event at Lake Forest. "We've heard nothing but compliments about how wonderful the experience has been," she added.
As Division III Week continues, the partnership between Lake Forest College and Special Olympics serves as a powerful reminder that athletics can create opportunities far beyond competition. Through events like these, Lake Forest student-athletes continue to give back, build connections, and help create unforgettable experiences for athletes in the community.
