Short-Handed Foresters Drop Regular-Season Finale

The Lake Forest men's basketball team concluded its regular season with a 94-85 defeat on the road to Monmouth College on Wednesday night.

Senior Alex Forowycz scored all of his 21 points in the second half to lead the Foresters (16-9, 11-5 MWC). Sophomore Nikolas Popovic scored a season-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists off the bench.

Luke Arington scored 14 points and added two steals, and Marko Visnjevac didn't miss on his four attempts, totaling nine points.

Forward Cristian Rodriguez scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting but did not play the entire second half, as he toughed it out to play 14 first-half minutes with a heavily-wrapped left shoulder.

The Foresters were already playing shorthanded without Coltrane Marchand, the team's second-leading rebounder, and struggled to contain the conference leaders on the glass. Monmouth outrebounded Lake Forest 41-21 for the game and won the rebounding battle 22-6 in the first half.

The two teams exchanged jabs to start the game, as there were 11 lead changes in the opening seven minutes of the game.

A Popovich layup gave the Foresters a 14-13 lead, but Monmouth mounted a run to break free. A 10-0 run from the hosts in less than three minutes put Lake Forest in a 23-14 hole.

Ten offensive rebounds led to 10 Monmouth points in the opening half, as Lake Forest went into halftime facing a 48-34 deficit.

In the second half, Forowycz, the Midwest Conference's leading scorer, finally broke free. After shooting 0-for-4 in the first half, Forowycz was 8-of-14 in the second half, including shooting 4-of-7 from three-point range after halftime.

After overcoming a 23-point deficit to take the lead late in their last game against Grinnell College, the Foresters used another big run Wednesday to put pressure on the home team. Lake Forest utilized a 19-4 run, led by nine points from Forowycz, to cut the Monmouth lead to just seven with 5:39 to play.

The senior Forowycz wasn't done hitting big shots, as he drilled a three-pointer plus a foul with 3:18 left, cutting to Monmouth lead to 77-71 after the Lake Forest, Ill., native converted the free throw.

Lake Forest could not cut the lead any further in the final minutes as Monmouth hung on to close out the victory.

Lake Forest has been locked into the No. 3 seed in the Midwest Conference tournament. The Foresters will play in semifinal round of the tournament on Friday, February 27, with their matchup still to be determined, as other conferences teams conclude the regular season Saturday.
