The Lake Forest College men's tennis team was defeated 7-0 by Case Western Reserve University, the fifth-ranked team in the nation, before prevailing 5-2 at Oberlin College on Saturday.
Both matches were played at Heisman Fieldhouse in Oberlin, Ohio.
Junior
Rodrigo Cunha had the most success of any Forester against Case Western Reserve, falling 6-4 in set one and 6-3 in set two at #3 singles.
Cunha and fellow sophomore
Felipe Moraes secured the doubles point for the visitors with a 7-6 (12-10) triumph against the top tandem from Oberlin. Junior
Bernardo Aguiar and senior
George Ciuca had already won 6-2 at number two while the Yeomen came out on top at #3.
There were five more tiebreakers in singles play and the Foresters won four of them. After splitting the first two sets at #1, Moraes doubled up his opponent 10-5 in the super tiebreaker to win that match. Aguiar's 10-8 tiebreaker win in set one gave him the lead and he took set two 6-3 for the victory. Playing at #5, Cunha edged out his opponent 7-6 (7-5) in the first set, dropped the second 6-0, and then took the decisive third set super tiebreaker 12-10. While no tiebreakers were necessary at #6, Foresters freshman
Zeke Bisharat's 7-5, 6-4 victory was certainly not lopsided.
The split on the day left Lake Forest with a 3-2 record on the season. Case Western Reserve improved to 5-0 and Oberlinn fell to 2-1.
The Foresters will take on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Racine, Wisconsin, next Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
