For the second time this season,
Gustavo Machado netted a brace, scoring both Forester goals as Lake Forest men's soccer defeated Monmouth 2-1.
Machado and the Forester offense found chances early on, as the senior combined with
Lorenzo Rojas and
Jimmy Cirbo to get three shots for the Foresters in the first 10 minutes. However, Monmouth responded by forcing Lake Forest goalkeeper
Andrew Swacha into a save in the 12th minute. Action slowed down in the first half as the teams settled into a rhythm, with the Foresters holding a majority of possession but the Fighting Scots finding chances on the counterattack. Neither team found a breakthrough in the first 45 minutes, as the game went to halftime tied at 0.
Coming out of the halftime break, it was more time in possession for the Foresters. In the 57th minute, a
Sam Satisky long throw found its way to Machado, who directed it towards goal and found the back of the net for his first goal of the evening. With his long throw into the box, Satisky earned his fourth assist of the season, the highest single-season mark for the junior.
Marceli Okonski, the goalkeeper in the second half for the Foresters, made a save in the 62nd minute. Then, Lake Forest went on the break with
Marcus Prising, who was brought down from behind in the box. Machado stepped up to the ball and delivered his second goal of the game, making him a perfect 3-of-3 from the penalty spot this season. Monmouth scored a goal in the 81st minute, lifting a long ball that worked up and over the back line to push the score to 2-1.
Lake Forest men's soccer is back in action on Saturday, taking on Grinnell. Kickoff from Farwell Field is set for 11 a.m., as part of the college's Alumni and Community Day celebration.
