Team Records Continue to Fall as Foresters Roll at Beloit

The Lake Forest College football team prevailed 55-7 at Beloit College on Saturday and improved to 8-0 on the season.

After a scoreless opening quarter, Forester running back Cole Sorensen scored on runs of one and six yards early in the second. Kicker Hudson Schambach followed up both scores with an extra point, giving him a school record 59 on the season, one more than Patrick Goldammer's 2021 total. He added five more extra points later in the contest.

Quarterback Ethan Springer closed out the first half scoring with a 30-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Luke Maxson with just seven seconds on the clock and connected with wideout Mason Whitaker on an 8-yard score with 8:28 to play in the third quarter. The plays gave Springer 32 touchdown passes on the year, surpassing the previous program record set by Pete Scaffidi in 2011.

Later in the third quarter tailback Brayden Long reached the end zone on a 5-yard run and the Lake Forest defense got in on the scoring when defensive lineman Nicholas Zook forced a fumble that was recovered by linebacker Joseph Okoh and returned 25 yards for a touchdown.

The Buccaneers finally got on the scoreboard with a touchdown with 10:37 left but the Foresters answered with wide receiver Dom Esposito's team record 17th touchdown reception of the year just three minutes later. The play covered 37 yards and Esposito finished the game with seven catches for 133 yards.

The final score of the day came on the first career reception for senior tight end Victor Harrington, who caught a swing pass from backup quarterback Robert Knorr behind the line of scrimmage and reached the end zone for an 8-yard play.

Lake Forest out-gained Beloit 558-208 in the contest and 401 of the visitors' yards came through the air. Springer completed 26 of 37 passes and his 388 yards are the fourth-highest single-game total in team history. Esposito was not the only Forester wide receiver with a 100-yard receiving day as Layton Duncan matched him with 131 yards on seven catches.

Javion McKinney was Lake Forest's leading rusher with 41 yards on just three attempts. Springer ran for 37 yards, Sorensen 35, and Taylen Goodwin 30.

Linebacker Blake Ware led the Forester defense with nine tackles, including his first sack of the year. Defensive end Ben Jones accounted for 2.5 of the unit's nine tackles for loss and raised his team-leading total on the season to 13.5. Lake Forest forced a pair of turnovers with an interception and 26-yard return by CJ King joining Okoh's scoop and score.

The Foresters have now won 15 consecutive games and are 6-0 in Midwest Conference play this fall. Beloit fell to 2-6 overall and 1-6 in the league.

Lake Forest will play its final regular season home game of the season against Cornell College at noon next Saturday.
