On a goal with just 11 seconds on the game clock, the Lake Forest College women's lacrosse team defeated Carroll University 13-12 on Saturday in the opening round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Tournament.
The game-winning sequence began with Forester senior
Krissy Kuwahara picking up a ground ball and carrying it out of the defensive zone with 30 seconds or so remaining. She sent it forward to classmate
Jenna Doctor, took ran up the left side of the field before finding junior
Emma Sharp behind the Pioneer goal. Sharp came around to the other side of the net and drew the attention of a pair of defenders before finding senior
Ashley Carr open for the biggest shot of her career. She did not miss, scoring her second goal of the contest and 35th this season.
The assist was Sharp's fifth of the day and 78th of the year and she also scored once in the game, raising her team-high point total to 130.
Sophomore
Ella Maher led Lake Forest with three goals while Carr, Kuwahara, Doctor, and junior
Shannon Gibbons each had two and senior
Abby Meyer added one more to the team total. Doctor now has exactly 300 career points and is just one tally away from becoming the first Forester to score 100 times in a season.
Meyer secured a team-high five draw controls and matched Carr with three caused turnovers. Kuwahara and junior
Claire Aimone recorded three ground balls apiece.
Forester junior goalkeeper
Cecilia Adams made nine saves on the afternoon to earn the victory.
Lake Forest jumped out to a 5-0 lead and that was still the score at the end of the first quarter. Carroll scored the first four goals of the second and the Forester advantage was just 6-5 at halftime.
Meyer started the second half scoring but another 4-0 run for the Pioneers put them on top by two later in the third quarter. Carr ended the run and Gibbons knotted the score at nine with just four seconds left in the period.
The Foresters led 10-9 and 11-10 but then trailed 12-11 in the fourth. Gibbons tied the score again with a minute-and-half left but Carroll secured the draw control and had a chance to regain the lead before Kuwahara caused the turnover that led to Carr's game-winner.
Lake Forest extended its winning streak to 10 games and improved to 15-4 on the year. Carroll finished the season 13-4.
The game was played at Denison University and the Foresters will face Denison in the second round Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
