Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Comeback Bid at Aurora Comes Up Just Short

The Forester men's lacrosse team narrowly missed handing Aurora University its first conference loss of the season Wednesday night, falling 10-9 on the road.

A pair of milestones were reached as Lake Forest junior Brendan became the second player in program history with 100 career goals and senior Andrew Widlar the first goalkeeper with 500 saves.

Herbert's 100th made the score 4-3 and closed out the scoring in the first quarter. Senior Chas Dean and sophomore Andrew Koch also scored for the Foresters in the period.

The Spartans pulled away in the second, scoring twice before Lake Forest senior John Casey netted the 113th of his career and twice after to make the score 8-4 at halftime.

Forester freshman Jackson Derosia struck with 5:38 remaining in the third quarter but the home team answered less than a minute later to restore its four-goal lead.

Lake Forest's comeback bid began in earnest with a man-up score by junior Ryan Dousevicz with 3:55 on the third quarter clock and a tally by freshman Aidan Wigton 65 seconds later. Dean's second of the night came shortly before the end of the period, making it a 9-8 game going into the fourth.

Neither team scored again until the Spartans's final goal of the night with 6:41 left. Herbert pulled the Foresters back to within one with 80 seconds remaining when he scooped the ball into the goal after a save by the Aurora goalie left it sitting just outside the crease. Herbert leads the team with 24 tallies on the season.

The Foresters had two more possessions and came within and inch or two of tying the score when a shot from senior Trip Gaston in the final seconds caromed off the post.

Senior Conor Murphy led Lake Forest with five ground balls while classmate Jack Gillard had a team-high three caused turnovers. Junior Gabe Boston won seven of his 12 face-offs and Widlar's nine saves on the evening raised his career total to 501.

The loss evened the Foresters' overall record at 7-7 and dropped their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference mark to 6-3. Aurora improved to 9-5 overall and 9-0 in the league.

Lake Forest will travel to Cornell College on Saturday for an 11:00 a.m. contest.
