Foresters Drop Hard-Fought Battle in OT

The Lake Forest men's basketball team set a new season high in points on Saturday against Grinnell College, but it was not enough as the Pioneers prevailed in overtime, 137-130.

Senior guard Alex Knight continued his dominant run of play against Grinnell this season. After logging 41 points and 17 rebounds in the teams' first meeting on Jan. 4, Knight could not be stopped Saturday as well, scoring 39 points and adding 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

Cristian Rodriguez scored 19 points and added seven rebounds, while senior Michael Michaud provided a spark off the bench for Lake Forest (9-12, 6-6 MWC) with a career-high 17 points on a tidy 8-of-9 shooting.

Coltrane Marchand hit a pair of free-throws with 17 seconds left to give Lake Forest a three-point lead, then Elijah Bull split his free throws with 11 seconds left to leave the Lake Forest lead at two. Grinnell was able to convert a layup with five seconds remaining, and Marchand's potential game-winner as time expired would not go down.

After an extremely efficient regulation, the Foresters' offense stalled out in overtime. Lake Forest shot a scalding 75.4 percent from the field before overtime and made 7-of-12 three-pointers. The Foresters' offense did not operate at the same efficiency in the extra period, as Lake Forest shot just 2-of-9 from the field, including missing all four of its three-point attempts.

A high-scoring first half highlighted to two teams' different styles of play, as the Foresters went into the locker room with a 63-58 lead. The Foresters worked the ball to the basket and lived in the paint, as they shot 27-of-34 (79.4 percent) from the field with 48 points in the paint, while only shooting 2-of-3 from beyond the three-point line.

Conversely, Grinnell played its signature style of turning a basketball game into a math equation and lived behind the three-point line. The Pioneers shot 12-of-30 from three-point range in the opening half while only attempting 12 shots from two-point range.

The Foresters will be back at home on Wednesday for another Midwest Conference clash with Lawrence University at 7:30 p.m.
