Senior guard
Elijah Bull set a new season high with 14 points – all coming in the second half – as Lake Forest held off Lawrence University on Wednesday, 70-63.
Â
Lake Forest (10-12, 7-6 MWC) led the final 16 minutes of the game but needed every point to close out Lawrence. The Vikings used a 10-2 run late in the game to cut the Lake Forest lead to 64-63 with just 49 seconds remaining.
Â
After a Lake Forest timeout, Bull drove to the basket for a layup and a foul to push the Foresters' lead back up to four with 28 seconds remaining. The Lake Forest defense would not allow another point and the hosts hit their free throws to earn the victory.
Â
Alex Forowycz was Lake Forest's leading scorer with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting. The sharpshooter also made all three of his three-point attempts.
Alex Knight and
Coltrane Marchand joined Bull and Forowycz in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Â
Wednesday's win over the Vikings was the second in less than two weeks after Lake Forest defeated Lawrence 80-75 on Feb. 1.
Â
The Foresters wasted no time getting their offense on a roll to start the game. Lake Forest made eight of its first 12 shots, including drilling 3-of-5 from the three-point line. Forowycz and Marchand combined for 19 points in the half, combining to shoot 7-of-9 overall and 3-of-4 from the three-point line.
Â
However, it was Lawrence that finished the first half strong, as the Vikings went into halftime on an 8-0 run to cut the Foresters lead to 34-30. Lake Forest would not score in the final 4:43 of the first half.
Â
In the second half, Bull shot 5-of-9 and made all three of his free throws to push Lake Forest above .500 in Midwest Conference play.
Â
The Foresters will return to action Saturday afternoon at the Sports and Recreation Center at 3 p.m. against Illinois College.
