Lake Forest Erases Four-Goal Deficit before Falling by One to Calvin

After trailing by four on three different occasions, the Forester men's lacrosse team came back and tied the score before falling 11-10 to Calvin University at home on Saturday.

The Knights scored fourth times before Lake Forest senior Trip Gaston finally put the home team on the scoreboard on a man-up goal with 4:54 to play in the opening period. Junior Brendan Herbert closed out the first quarter scoring with just a few seconds on the clock.

After Calvin regained its four-goal cushion with a pair of scores early in the second quarter, the Foresters closed back to within two after sophomore Tyler Dearmin and Gaston struck in the first two minutes before halftime.

Lake Forest sophomore Macklin made it a one-goal game with nine minutes to play in the third but the Knights rallied with three straight scores to regain their four-goal advantage.

Junior Ryan Dousevicz netted his first of the season with 80 seconds to play in the period and the Foresters trailed 9-5 going into the fourth.

Lake Forest finally drew even after the third score of the season for Macklin, the second of the year for freshman John Shannon, and the third of the day for Gaston. The last two of those were man-up goals as the Foresters were 3-for-6 on the day with a Knight in the penalty area.

There was 9:28 on the clock when Gaston completed his hat trick and just 20 seconds passed before Calvin went back on top. The visitors added what proved to be an important insurance goal less than three minutes later and Herbert closed out the scoring with his team-high fourth of the year with 90 seconds remaining in the contest.

The Foresters forced the Calvin goalie to make a pair of saves and another Lake Forest shot hit the post in the final minute of the game.

Senior goalkeeper Andrew Widlar made 15 saves for Lake Forest and led all players in the game with eight ground balls. Fellow senior Conor Murphy was next on the team with six ground balls and added a game-high five caused turnovers.

Lake Forest fell to 0-2 while Calvin improved to 2-0 on the year.

The Foresters will travel to Hope College next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. (ET) contest.
