Despite a spirited run in the fourth quarter, the Lake Forest women's basketball team could not pull off the come-from-behind win on Saturday against Illinois College, falling 70-68.
Â
The Foresters (4-19, 2-12 MWC) opened the fourth quarter on a 14-0 run to turn an 11-point deficit into a three-point lead, capped by a three-pointer from senior
Rebecca Christodoulou with under four minutes remaining to give Lake Forest a 63-60 lead.
Â
After both teams traded baskets down the stretch, fellow senior
Peyton Davidson secured a defensive rebound and drove all the way to the basket for a layup to give the Foresters a 68-67 lead with one minute remaining.
Â
The Lady Blues converted a layup of their own plus a foul to take the lead in the waning seconds, and Christodoulou's chance to tie the game with less than five seconds left would not go down.
Â
On a day that four seniors were honored at the Sports & Recreation Center, it was those seniors that led the way for Lake Forest. Christodoulou scored a game-high 28 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, while seniors
Peyton Noles and Davidson scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Â
For Davidson, her 11 points, nine rebounds, and four steals all set new season highs on the year. Â
Â
Lake Forest shot 40 percent from the field for the game and made 7-of-24 three-point attempts (29.2 percent).
Â
In addition, the Foresters honored senior
Emmy Punches with a start on Senior Day. The Burlingame, Kan., native had been sidelined since Jan. 11 with injury and was unavailable to play, but earned the start with her senior classmates. The Foresters won the tip-off and Punches was able to convert a layup before being subbed out for the game.
Â
The Foresters will be back in action Wednesday night in their final home game of the season against Ripon College. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
