The Lake Forest College men's basketball team made a program record-setting 40 free throws in a 97-88 victory at Loras College on Tuesday.
The Foresters missed just four times from the line and also shot an efficient 52.2 percent from the field and 9-for-16 (56.3%) from three-point range. The previous school record of 39 made free throws was set in February of 2014 and the next three on the list occurred in the 1950s and 1960s.
Senior forward
Cristian Rodriguez was perfect in 10 trips to the line and became just the ninth player in team history to reach double figures in free throws without a miss. Senior wing
Alex Forowycz nearly added his name to same list, going 9-for-9 in a 35-point performance. He also made his first six three-point field goal attempts before missing the last and matching the second-highest single-game three-point field goal percentage in program history. Forowycz is now 30-for-30 on free throws this year after making each his final 24 attempts from the line last season.
The Foresters' entire starting lineup scored in double figures. After Forowicz, Rodriguez finished with 14 points, senior wing Luke Aringon had 11, and junior wing
Coltrane Marchand and sophomore guard
Marko Visnjevac chipped in with 10 apiece. Marchand led the visitors with eight rebounds
Lake Forest limited Loras to 40 percent shooting from the field, making up for 15 turnovers to the Duhawks' 10 and the home team's 37-29 edge on the boards.
Arington scored the game's first six points and the Foresters never trailed in the contest. The margin grew to a game-high 15 points (29-15) after a pair of Forowycz free throws with 9:41 remaining in the first half. The Duhawks battled back and tied the score just five minutes later and Lake Forest took a 45-42 lead into the locker room at halftime.
A 13-4 run to open the second half gave Lake Forest a 12-point advantage, which eventually shrunk to just two points with eight minutes left. Forowycz answered with a three-pointer and the Foresters led by at least three the rest of the way. They were successful on 11 of 12 trips to the line in the final minute-and-a-half to secure the victory.
Lake Forest was also 23-for-25 at the free throw line in Monday's victory over North Central College and are now shooting 79 percent for the season.
The Foresters' back-to-back victories at the Loras Holiday Classic raised their record this year to 6-5. Loras, meanwhile, fell to 8-3.
Lake Forest's final 14 games of the regular season will be against fellow Midwest Conference members, beginning with Saturday's match-up with visiting Knox College. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
