Lake Forest Shuts Out Northland to Finish Off Series Sweep

The Forester women's hockey team rolled 5-0 at Northland College on Saturday.

Two of the visitors' goals were scored by junior forward Emma Sweeney, who now has three on the season. She gave Lake Forest the lead at the 3:41 mark of the second period and eventually made it a 4-0 game early in the third. It was Sweeney's first career multi-goal performance.

Three other Foresters had two points on the day. Sophomore forward Victoria Liu was credited with assists on both of Sweeney's scores, junior forward Macy Gehrke also had two assists to finish the series with six points, and sophomore forward Ella Maher netted her team-high seventh goal of the season and set up another score.

Additional tallies came from senior forward Zoey Whittington and junior defenseman Willow Poppleton. Whittington's third of the year gave Lake Forest a 2-0 lead at 12:36 in the second period and Poppleton's first career goal added to the lead four minutes later.

Junior goaltender Angie Lombardi kept the LumberJills off the scoreboard throughout the contest, making four saves in the opening period, eight in the second, and six in the third. It was her second shutout of the season and the third of her career.

Lake Forest evened its overall record on the season at 5-5-2 while Northland fell to 0-10-0.

The Foresters will play their final non-conference game of the year at Concordia University Wisconsin Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
