Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Foresters Triple Up Trine in Series Opener

The Lake Forest College women's hockey team hosted and defeated Trine University 3-1 Friday night and jumped over the Thunder into fourth place in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings.

After a scoreless opener period, the Foresters broke through at the 5:25 mark of the second with the third goal of the season by junior defenseman Holly Kiernan. She blasted a shot from the right circle that flew under the goaltender's blocker and into the left side of the goal, converting the home team's first power play opportunity of the night.

Lake Forest struck again with 99 seconds remaining in the period on a rebound goal from senior forward Zoey Whittington. Her sixth score of the season was followed up just 20 seconds later by the second of the year for freshman forward Gabriela Giglione. Jasmine Kohl won the face-off in the right circle to fellow sophomore forward Victoria Liu, who left it for Giglione to fire past the goalie.

The score remained 3-0 until the Thunder netted a short-handed goal with just 2:09 to play in the contest.

While Forester senior goaltender Donna Fowler was denied her second shutout of the season, she did finish with 25 saves and a .962 save percentage on the evening. She also evened her record at 5-5-1 and raised her save percentage to .923 on the season.

Lake Forest out-shot Trine 42-26 and improved to 7-8-3 overall and 3-5-3 in league play. The team's 14 points are one more than sixth-place Marian University's total, two ahead of Trine and Lawrence University, and three clear of Aurora University. Trine fell to 6-10-2 overall and 3-6-2 in conference play.

The Foresters and Thunder will face off again in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon at 2:00.
