The Forester women's hockey team strengthened its grip on fourth place in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over visiting Trine University on Saturday.
Lake Forest out-shot Trine 31-14 during the first two periods but both goalies were still perfect after 40 minutes of play.
The Thunder struck first with a power play goal 65 seconds into the third and the score remained 1-0 for nearly six more minutes.
The Foresters pulled even at the 6:58 mark on the second goal of the weekend and fourth this season for junior defenseman
Holly Kiernan. Players from both teams were battling for the puck in front of the Thunder goal for nearly 10 seconds before Kiernan connected for the score.
The game's final goal also came from close range with three Foresters touching the puck within just a few feet of the goal and senior forward
Anna McCluskey finishing off the play with her third goal and second game-winner of the season.
Lake Forest senior goaltender
Donna Fowler made 22 saves on the day and turned away 47 of the Thunder's 49 shots on goal in the weekend series sweep.
The victory evened the Foresters' overall record at 8-8-3 and raised their NCHA mark to 4-5-3 and point total to 17. They moved past Trine into four place in the league standings on Friday and now lead Lawrence University and Marian University, who are tied-for-fifth, by three points. Trine fell to 6-11-2 overall and 3-7-2 with a dozen points in the league.
Lake Forest will host the University of Dubuque next weekend.
