Senior forward
Zoey Whittington scored the game's first and last goals as the Lake Forest College women's hockey team hosted and defeated Marian University 5-2 Saturday night.
Whittington redirected a shot from junior defenseman
Holly Kiernan off the right post and into the goal at the 6:09 mark of the opening period.
The Foresters doubled their lead at 12:51 when sophomore forward
Jenna Fryar struck for the third time this year. Marian got on the scoreboard 33 seconds later and Lake Forest still led 2-1 at the end of the period.
The official game-winning goal came from sophomore forward
Jasmine Kohl at 1:51 in the second. It was her fourth score of the season. Kohl also earned an assist on the next goal as fellow sophomore forward
Ella Maher redirected in a shot from junior defenseman
Willow Poppleton. Maher leads Lake Forest with eight goals this winter.
A pair of Forester penalties created a 5-on-3 power play opportunity for the Sabres in the third period and they netted the game's only power play goal at 6:49.
Lake Forest, however, closed on the scoring with Whittington's first career short-handed goal just 29 seconds later. Junior forward
Macy Gehrke picked up her second assist of the night as Whittington raised her goal total this season to five.
Marian finished the night with a slight 32-30 advantage in shots but Forester senior goaltender Donny Fowler made 30 saves to earn the victory. She turned away 56 of the Sabres 58 shots on goal in the weekend series and now owns a .930 save percentage on the year.
The victory evened Lake Forest's overall record at 6-6-3 and lifted the team into fourth place in the Norrthern Collegiate Hockey Association standings with a league mark of 2-3-3 and 11 points. Marian fell to 4-10-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the conference.
The Foresters will travel to Adrian College next weekend.
