The Lake Forest College women's tennis team blanked Cornell College 5-0 in the semifinals before falling 5-1 to Grinnell College in the final of the 2023-24 Midwest Conference Team Tournament on Saturday.
The tournament was held at Hitters SportsPlex in Middleton, Wisconsin.
The Foresters started the day with three victories in doubles against Cornell. Freshman
Kate Feist and sophomore
Rebecca Daskal were the first to finish, defeating the Rams' #3 team 8-2. Freshman
Sofia Strupovets and sophomore
Kristen Ahn did not drop a game at #2 and senior
Margaret Bugnacki and junior
Sara Lopez completed the sweep by doubling up Cornell's top tandem 8-4.
The last to finish in doubles, Lopez and Bugnacki were the first in singles. Lopez rolled 6-1, 6-0 at #4 and Bugnacki's 6-3, 6-0 triumph at #3 clinched the Forester victory. Strupovets, Feist, and Daskal had each won the first set while Ahn was trailing when the match ended.
Strupovets and Ahn came from behind to win 8-6 at #2 doubles in the final.
Grinnell took the other two doubles matches and clinched the tourney tiel with victories at the bottom three spots in the singles lineup. Strupovets, Ahn, and Bugnacki had each won her first set when the match ended.
Lake Forest finished the year with a 17-6 record, matching the third-highest single-season victory total in program history. Cornell finished 13-12 while Grinnell will enter the NCAA Division III Tournament at 22-4.
