A Dozen Foresters Listed among the Best in the MLC

The Midwest Lacrosse Conference released the 2024 All-MLC Teams for the men on Friday and Lake Forest College had a league-high 12 honorees.

In addition to earning First Team All-MLC accolades for the third year in a row, Forester junior Conor Murphy was named MLC Defensive Player of the Year on Friday. He ranked third in the conference with 43 caused turnovers and fourth with 76 ground balls in 16 games this spring. He also anchored a defense that has surrendered a league-low 7.43 goals per contest on the season.

Lake Forest also had the MLC Rookie of the Year for the second straight season in freshman midfielder Macklin Thomas, who is tied-for-seventh in the league with 44 points and ranks eighth with 32 goals. Thomas began his career with three consecutive hat tricks and has seven on the year.

Sophomore forward Brendan Herbert, the 2023 MLC Rookie of the Year, was also named First Team All-MLC again on Friday. The Foresters' leading scorer ranks second in the league with 40 goals and fourth with 52 points so far this season.

Junior Trip Gaston is tied with Thomas for seventh in the conference with 44 points and is seventh with 33 goals. He also led the Foresters with 16 points on 11 goals and 5 assists during the team's four-game MLC schedule and is now a two-time First Team All-MLC selection.

At the defensive end of the field, juniors Connor Tartaglione and Jack Gillard joined Murphy in garnering First Team All-MWC distinction. Gillard is tied-for-fourth in the conference with 26 caused turnovers while Tartaglione's 55 ground balls rank eighth. Tartaglione, who was also named First Team All-MLC a year ago after receiving Honorable Mention as a freshman, has also chipped in with eight goals and three assists so far this year.

The Foresters' last line of defense, goalie Andrew Widlar, was also a First Team All-MWC selection. The junior owns a league-best .563 save percentage and 7.33 goals against average this season and ranks eighth in the nation in the latter category. Widlar was named Second Team All-MWC a year ago.

Freshman Carson Pagel leads Lake Forest and ranks third in the conference with 27 assists. He has also scored 20 goals and his 47 points are the fifth-highest total in the MLC, He was a Second Team All-MLC selection on Friday, as were sophomores Ryan Dousevicz and Brant Schuckman, junior Aidan Horn, and graduate student Gordon Kiesgen IV. Dousevicz ranks sixth in the conference with 17 assists and tied-for-11th with 36 points while Schuckman is tied-for-seventh with 16 assists and tied-for-14th with 36 points. Horn's 18 caused turnovers are also tied-for-11th in the league while Kiesgen's .689 face-off winning percentage leads the MLC and ranks seventh in the nation. Kiesgen is now a four-time All-MWC player, having earned the honor each of hte last three years while playing for Monmouth College.

In addition to the all-conference announcement, the MLC released its All-Sportsmanship Team, which included Forester sophomore Dylan Alexander.

Lake Forest is currently 14-2 overall this season and captured its second consecutive MLC regular season title with a perfect 4-0 mark in league play. The Foresters defeated Cornell College 20-1 in Wednesday's MLC Tournament semifinal and will host the University of Dubuque in the final Saturday afternoon at 2:00.
