The Lake Forest College women's lacrosse team was edged out 14-13 by visiting College of Saint Benedict on Saturday in a game that decided the 2024 Midwest Lacrosse Conference regular season title.
The Foresters scored the game's first three goals and led for most of the afternoon. The Bennies came back and tied the score for the first time at 4-4 before a goal by Lake Forest junior
Ryleigh Nelson with 10 seconds remaining in the opening quarter made the score 5-4 in favor of the home team.
Saint Benedict pulled even again less than a minute into the second quarter but senior
Ali Graham's third of the game and Nelson's second put the Foresters on top 7-5 with six minutes to play before halftime. After a score from the Bennies, Graham and Nelson each struck again to give Lake Forest a 9-6 lead at halftime.
A man-up goal by sophomore
Daulath Khan was the Foresters' only tally of the third quarter while Saint Benedict scored three times to make it a 10-9 game going into the fourth.
The visitors netted two more goals, finally taking their first lead of the day with 12:44 to play. Graham, however, secured the draw control and tied the game just 11 seconds later. Saint Benedict regained the lead at the 11:52 mark and went ahead by two with 7:40 left. Graham's career-high-tying sixth score of the game pulled the Foresters back to within one 31 seconds later but the Bennies restored their two-goal cushion with 3:05 remaining.
Hoping for a dramatic finish, Lake Forest pulled back to within one a final time on a free position shot from Nelson with 8.3 seconds on the clock. It was her fourth goal and fifth point of the contest. The Foresters were unable to win the draw, however, and Saint Benedict came away with the victory.
