The Lake Forest College men's lacrosse team routed Beloit College 23-5 at home on Wednesday and several milestones were reached along the way.
The victory itself was the program record 30th for
Phil Dodson as the Foresters' head coach, breaking a tie with Wayne Braxton, who came out on top 29 times during his six seasons at the helm of the program (1983-88).
It was also the first career win for junior goalie
John Niccoli, who made one save while keeping the Buccaneers off the scoreboard in the opening quarter. Sophomore Jacon Lipson was in goal for the second quarter and junior
Kyle Joyce made three saves in the third. Freshman
Benjamin Flaherty made his collegiate debut and stopped a pair of shots on goal in the fourth.
Sophomore
Brendan Herbert, Lake Forest's leading scorer, added three to his season total, which now stands at 27. While he was recording his third hat trick in a row and sixth this spring, junior
Parker Hevers and freshman Tyler Deamin accomplished the same feat for the first time as Foresters.
Additional multi-goal performances were turned in by juniors
Trip Gaston and
John Casey and sophomores
Brant Schuckman and
Dylan Alexander. Gaston and Casey also became the second and third players in program history to record 100 career points and they reached the milestone simultaneously when Gaston set up Casey's first score of the contest late in the opening period.
Six other Foresters put their names in the scoring column, including junior max Guyott for the first time in his career.
Sophomores
John O'Reilly and
Gabe Boston combined to win 23 of the game's 30 face-offs and, with six ground balls, O'Reilly shared game-high honors in that category with Alexander and Dearmin. Lake Forest had 18 players cause at least one turnover with junior
Conor Murphy's three leading the way.
The Foresters led 9-0 after the first quarter, 16-2 at halftime, and 19-5 by the end of the third. Their final tally of 23 goals tied the program record originally set at Monmouth College last season and matched against Augustana College on March 16.
The victory is the fourth in a row and ninth in 10 games this season for Lake Forest while Beloit fell to 1-4.
The Foresters will begin Midwest Lacrosse Conference play at Cornell College on Saturday with the opening face-off scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
