The Lake Forest College men's hockey team used a four-goal third period to pull away and secure a 6-2 triumph at Aurora University Friday afternoon.
The Foresters led 2-0 after the first period thanks to junior forward
Jared Gerger's sixth and seventh scores of the season. He struck at the 11:07 mark, just 23 seconds into the game's first power play opportunity, and doubled the visitors' lead just after the expiration of another power play in the final minute of the period.
After Lake Forest out-shot the Spartans 10-9 in the first period, Aurora had a 15-8 advantage in that category in the second and a 15-9 edge in the third. Forester junior goaltender
Bobby McCloskey, however, finished the afternoon with 37 saves to earn the victory.
The visitors pulled away early in the third. Sophomore forward
Chase Freiermuth, who assisted on the first goal of the contest, scored twice in the first five minutes of the period. Gerger and sophomore forward
Logan Kittleson assisted on both tallies. The Spartans got one back at the 5:23 mark but the Foresters' three-goal lead was restored just 14 seconds later on an unassisted goal by junior forward
Connor Tartaglione. Freiermuth completed his second hat trick of the season and Kittleson registered his fourth assist of the night at 9:10.
The victory improved Lake Forest's overall record to 7-17-0 and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association mark to 4-13-0. The Foresters are now tied with Lawrence University and Marian University, who play each other Friday and Saturday night, for seventh place in the league standings. Aurora fell to 12-11-1 overall and 11-6-0 in the league.
The Foresters and Spartans will face off again in Lake Forest' Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday night at 7:00.
