Despite a 29-23 advantage in shots on goal, the Forester men's hockey team was defeated 3-1 by the University of Dubuque on Saturday.
Lake Forest's only goal of the contest was the only score of the opening period and came off the stick of sophomore forward
Colin Bella with 1:50 on the clock. Senior forward
Tyler Nielsen chased down a loose puck just beyond the blue line and skated up the right side of the ice. His centering pass found Bella just inside the left circle and he fired a shot into the left side of the net to give the home team the lead.
Nielsen was presented with the program's Peter Taylor Award during the first intermission in a ceremony that also recognized previous recipients as well as other former Foresters who returned to campus for Saturday's Alumni Day festivities.
The score remained 1-0 until the 11:34 mark of the second period. The Spartans tied that game at that point and took the lead on a power play goal four minutes later. They tacked on an addition insurance goal while on the power play again with 14:40 to play in the contest.
Despite playing with an extra attacker instead of a goalie for two-and-a-half minutes late in the game the Foresters were unable to close the gap on the scoreboard.
Lake Forest is now 6-17-0 overall and 3-13-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association this season. Dubuque, meanwhile, improved to 3-17-2 overall and 3-13-0 in the league.
The Foresters will take on Aurora University to close out the regular season next weekend. The teams will face off at Aurora Friday afternoon at 3:00 and in Lake Forest's Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
