Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Steve Bourbon

Rams’ Hot Start Too Much for Foresters to Overcome

The Lake Forest women's basketball team fell behind in the first quarter and could not recover in a 60-48 loss Saturday at Cornell.

The Foresters (2-6, 1-1 MWC) came out shooting the ball well with junior guard Jamie Springstead hitting a three-pointer for the game's first basket. It was the first of three made three-pointers in the opening frame for the Foresters, with guards Rebecca Christodoulou and Careah Baitlon also connecting from beyond the arc.

Despite their efforts, Cornell (5-3, 2-0) hit four three-pointers in the first quarter, utilizing three of them during a 14-2 run that gave the Rams a lead they would not give up for the rest of the game.

Senior forward Emmy Punches led the way for Lake Forest with 10 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. It marked her first double-double of the season and it is her second in the last two years.

The Foresters fought hard in the fourth quarter using an 8-0 run behind a pair of freshmen in forward Makayla Campbell and guard Ariana Ferreira-Torralba. Campbell made four straight free throws and Ferreira-Torralba sunk a three-pointer to cut the deficit to just five points midway through the fourth quarter.

The Foresters cut the lead to five points on multiple occasions throughout the fourth quarter, but could not get any closer.

Lake Forest leaned on Campbell's stellar free-throw shooting much of the fourth quarter with the freshman making 8-of-10 in the final quarter to provide a spark.

While Lake Forest's leading scorer Christodoulou struggled shooting from the field, she did make a mark on the glass, adding 11 rebounds. It's her fourth time in last five games recording double-digit rebounds.

The Foresters will have some time off with final exams and holidays approaching, and their next game will not be until the Florida Sunshine Tournament against Colby College on Dec. 29.
