Senior guard
Alex Knight put up a season-high 33 points and notched his first double-double of the season with 11 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Lake Forest College men's basketball team fell at Kalamazoo College on Saturday, 74-72.
Knight hit a layup to cut the Kalamazoo (5-2) lead to just two with nine seconds remaining in the game. Then off a Hornets missed free throw, the senior secured the rebound and attempted to send the game to overtime but his layup at the buzzer would not go for Lake Forest (3-6, 0-2 MWC).
Senior guard
Elijah Bull chipped in 12 points and four assists for the Foresters, and junior guard
Alex Brown provided a well-rounded effort with seven points, six rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
While Kalamazoo led much of the game, Knight and the Foresters made a push down the stretch to attempt to seize the nonconference win on the road. Lake Forest mounted an 11-4 run to tie the game at 67 with just 2:07 remaining, capped by a Bull layup.
After allowing a score on the ensuing possession, the Foresters turned to their senior leader once again in Knight, as the Chicago native hit a three-pointer off an assist from Brown. The Foresters forced a miss on the Hornets' next two shots, but could not secure the rebound, and eventually allowed a go-ahead layup with 53 seconds remaining and Lake Forest could not retake the lead.
It was the fourth time in Knight's Lake Forest career that he recorded 33 points in a single game, with his career-high of 34 points coming last season against Grinnell. His 11 rebounds Saturday also tied his career-highest output on the glass.
He did most of his damage from behind the arc, breaking out of an early-season slump from the three-point line. Knight came into the game shooting just 15.1 percent from three-point range, but he hit five of his seven attempts from downtown Saturday.
The Foresters will be off for two weeks for finals and holiday break before returning to action in the Nicolet National Bank Holiday Tournament in De Pere, Wis., facing St. Norbert College on Dec. 29.
