The Lake Forest College men's soccer team defeated visiting Grinnell College 4-1 on Friday and will play in the Midwest Conference Tournament final on Saturday.
The Pioneers actually started the scoring in the game's 12th minute but a handball in the box allowed the Foresters to tie the score on a penalty kick by sophomore
Peter Cirbo. It was Cirbo's team-high seventh score of the season.
The home team pulled ahead at the 29:24 mark when
Finn Gruver lofted a shot from the right side of the penalty area over the goalie ind into the top-left corner of the goal. Gruver now has two goals, including one game-winner, on the year.
The score remained 2-1 until the 70th minute when senior
Arsene Uwamba's cross from the right side made it through the Grinnell defense to junior
Gio Diaz. The goalkeeper was able to get a piece of Diaz's shot but not enough as it flew into the top-right corner of the goal. The score was the sixth of the year for Diaz and he is tied with Cirbo for the team lead with 18 points.
Freshman
Sam Satisky's third goal of the year closed out the scoring with 6:03 remaining in the contest. Cirbo and sophomore
Ollie Francis earned assists on the play.
Grinnell out-shot the Foresters 9-7 in the first half but the home team had a 7-2 advantage in that category during the final 45 minutes.
Lake Forest sophomore
Andrew Swacha made five saves to earn the victory, his ninth of the season. The program record of 10 was initially set in 1985 and matched sixth times since.
The Foresters improved to 9-7-3 on the year while Grinnell's season ends at 8-6-5.
Illinois College advanced on penalty kicks in the other semifinals, setting up a tournament final between the top two teams in the regular season standings. They will face off Saturday at 11:00 a.m. on Mohr Field.
