The Lake Forest College men's soccer team erased an early two-goal deficit and prevailed 4-2 at Illinois College on Saturday to move past the Blueboys into first place in the Midwest Conference standings.
The game did not start well for the Foresters, who surrendered a pair of goals in the first seven minutes.
Lake Forest sophomore forward
Nathan Kostovetsky cut the margin in half at the 19:56 mark. Junior
Gio Diaz's cross from the right side found its way through the Blueboy defense to Kostovetsky, whose shot from a sharp angle left of the goal hit the ride side of the net.
Kostovetsky struck again to tie the score at 27:11. A long pass from the defensive side of the field was headed forward by sophomore
Gustavo Machado and past the last defender to Kostovetsky, who slipped it past the goalie for his second of the day and fourth this season.
The Foresters took the lead less than seven minutes later. A handball in the box put sophomore
Peter Cirbo on the spot and his successful penalty kick turned out to be the official game-winning goal.
Lake Forest out-shot the home team 6-5 in the first half and 4-1 in the second. Cirbo added an insurance goal, his team-high sixth of the year, in the 72nd minute with Diaz picking up his second assist of the day.
Sophomore
Andrew Swacha made a pair of saves and earned the victory to improve to 7-3-2 this fall. It was his 12th career win and he now ranks tied-for-10th in program history in that category.
The Foresters evened their overall record at 7-7-3 and raised their MWC mark to 6-0-1. Illinois College fell to 11-4-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the league.
Lake Forest will host Cornell College in next Saturday's regular season finale. A victory in the 11:00 a.m. contest would clinch the league-leading 19th conference championship in program history and the right to host the four-team MWC Tournament November 8-9.
