Foresters Post Another Shutout at Marian

The Lake Forest College women's hockey team earned its seventh shutout of the season Saturday evening, a 2-0 triumph at Marian University.

What proved to be the official game-winning goal was scored by freshman forward Ella Maher at the 12:23 mark of the opening period, just 11 seconds into the team's first power play opportunity of the game. Junior defenseman Sophia Chapman's shot from the point was saved by the Sabre goaltender but Maher, despite have been knocked down to the ice, was there to put back the rebound. Senior forward Lauren Wensel was also credtied with an assist on Maher's third score of the season and first career game-winner.

The score remained 1-0 until the final minute of the contest. Marian had pulled its goalie with 1:52 remaining and the Foresters finally took advantage with 36.7 seconds on the clock. Wensel intercepted a pass just outside the Foresters' zone and quickly passed the puck up the right side to sophomore forward Macy Gehrke, whose shot from just outside the blue line slipped past the Sabre defenseman and into the empty net. It was Gehrke's fourth goal of the year.

Freshman goaltender Chelsea Dennis kept the home team off the scoreboard throughout the contest. She made three saves in the first period, nine in the second, and eight in the third for her fifth shutout of the season. She is now 8-4-0 with a 1.65 goals against average and .940 save percentage.

The victory improved the Foresters' overall record to 10-7-0 and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association mark to 7-2-0. Marian fell to 6-9-1 overall and 4-5-0 in the league.

The teams will face off again in Lake Forest's Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
