The Forester men's hockey team earned a point in the conference standings in Saturday night's 6-5 overtime loss at home to Marian University.
It was a back-and-forth battle which began with a power play goal for the Sabres at the 8:11 mark of the opening period.
Lake Forest tied the score at 10:46 on the first score of the season for sophomore forward
Justin Ross. The home team then pulled ahead when fellow sophomore forward
Colin Bella struck for the seventh time this season at 16:03.
The Foresters' 2-1 lead after the first period was erased when Marian tied the score five minutes into the second. They regained the lead, however, on
Matteas Derraugh's third of the year at 16:15. In addition, senior forward
Ben Perkins earned the second of his two assists on the night.
Entering the third period with five goals combined, the teams matched that total in the next 20 minutes. The Sabres netted the first three in the period's first six minutes, including their second power play goal of the night.
Lake Forest cut the two-goal deficit in half at the 8:33 mark on senior forward
Tyler Nielsen's seventh goal of 2023-24. The score was still 5-4 when the Foresters pulled their goalie in favor of an extra attacker with 2:18 to play. The move paid off 45 seconds later when the team's leading scorer, sophomore forward
Chase Freiermuth, tied the game on his ninth goal of the season.
The Sabres, however, scored a minute-and-a-half into overtime to earn the victory.
Lake Forest is now 5-11-0 overall and 2-7-0 with four overtime losses in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Marian, meanwhile, improved to 7-9-0 overall and 3-6-0 in the league.Â
The same two teams will face off again in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
