The Lake Forest College women's basketball team defeated Lakeland University 73-66 Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of DePauw University's Amy Hasbrook Memorial Tournament.
Lake Forest trailed by three going into the fourth quarter and by six 30 seconds into the period. The margin was five before baskets by Forester seniors
Melissa Gomez and
Maurissa Edwards made it a one-point game with five minutes left. Edwards connected again to give her team the lead but a three-pointer from the Muskies put them back on top 66-64 with four minutes left. Gomez tied the score with less than three minutes on the clock and combined with Edwards and sophomore guard
Taylor Major to shoot 7-for-10 from the foul line in the final 70 seconds to secure the victory.
Edwards was successful on all but one of her 10 trips to the foul line and led all players in the game with a season-high 22 points. She also had 17 points in Friday's semifinal game and was named to the Amy Hasbrook Memorial All-Tournament Team.
Gomez shot 7-for-11 from the field and was next on the team with 15 points. Junior forward
Emmy Punches finished with a season-high 13 points and added nine rebounds and four assists. Major filled up the stat sheet with eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds, five steals, and two blocked shots.
The Foresters shot 44.3 percent from the field while Lakeland was at just 34.3 percent. Lake Forest also had a 44-38 edge in rebounds.
Lake Forest is now 209 and Lakeland 3-8 this season.
The Foresters will resume Midwest Conference play against visiting Knox College next Wednesday with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
