Foresters Match Season High with Eight Goals in Opener against SUNY Canton

The Lake Forest College men's hockey team took the lead for good late in the second period and pulled away in the third of Saturday's 8-3 triumph over visiting SUNY Canton.

The Foresters netted the first two goals of the contest and never trailed. They led 3-2 after 20 minutes of play but a Kangaroo tally at 10:44 in the second tied the score.

A major penalty against the visitors coincided with a minor for Lake Forest, eventually resulting in a three-minute power play beginning at the 17:55 mark of the second. The Foresters took advantage with a pair of goals just 27 seconds apart and took a 5-3 lead into the locker room at the second intermission.

Lake Forest added insurance goals at 3:38, 8:54, and 11:01 in the final period and matched their highest scoring output this season.

Junior forward Griffen Sanom and sophomore forwards Chase Freiermuth and Logan Kittleson made up the team's most successful line on Saturday and finished with 11 points combined. Freiermuth turned in his first career hat trick and added an assist, Kittleson had a goal and three assists, and Sanom scored scored one goal and set up two.

Senior forward Tyler Nielsen accounted for two of the other three goals and junior forward Connor Tartaglione scored for the first time as a Forester. Junior defenseman Matteas Derraugh had three assists, one more than he had all season going into the game.

Lake Forest junior goaltender Bobby McCloskey made 25 saves to earn the victory and improve to 3-2-0 on the year.
