Foresters Fall to Cornell in Five Sets

The Lake Forest College volleyball team was edged out 25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 14-25, 15-9 by visiting Cornell College, the 23rd-ranked team in the nation, Friday night.

Forester senior Grace Franz established a new career high with 21 kills and added 10 digs for her eighth double-double of the season.

Fellow senior Holland Smits was next on the squad in kills with 11 and four other teammates reached double figures in digs, led by junior Lauren Volk with a career-high 19. Senior Mary Gegen had 14 while Lake Forest's setters, junior Juli Barrientos and sophomore Lilly Robinson, chipped in with 13 and 10, respectively.

Robinson and Barrientos also combined for 39 assists and five aces in the contest.

The Foresters' leader in blocks wasa junior Riley Stapley with five.

The first two sets were close throughout and each team was able to come through late to split them. Cornell won the first six points and led by as many as nine in set three and the Foresters finished off set four with a 10-2 run. Lake Forest led 8-6 in the fifth and final set but the Rams rebounded by taking nine of the next 10 points and the match.

The loss dropped the Foresters' overall record to 15-6 and Midwest Conference mark to 5-2. Cornell improved to 17-6 overall and 5-0 in the league.

Lake Forest will close out its conference schedule against Grinnell College at home on Saturday. The match will begin at 1:00 p.m.
