Foresters Start 2023 with Rout of Concordia Wisconsin

Box Score

The Lake Forest College men's hockey team rolled to a 7-1 victory at Concordia University Friday night in the first game of the teams' annual "Border Battle."

It was a big night for the forward line of freshman Justin Ross, senior David Cohen, and junior Tyler Nielsen, who each finished with three points. Ross started the scoring at the 15:17 mark of the opening period and added his sixth of the season at 5:54 in the second. Cohen followed up Nielsen's first tally with the official game-winner just 36 seconds later and scored unassisted with 4:25 to play in the contest to raise his season total to seven. Ross netted his fifth goal of the year late in the second period.

Lake Forest was 1-for-3 on the power play with freshman forward Colin Bella converting at 11:28 in the second period. It was his team-high ninth goal of the season.

The visitors other score came off the stick of sophomore forward Griffen Sanom in his Forester debut.

Senior goaltender Nick Wiencek kept the Falcons off the scoreboard for the game's first 47 minutes and finished the night with 18 saves, including 10 in the final period. He was also credited with an assist on Bella's goal.

The Forestewrs are now 5-6-3 overall this season and in fifth place in the standings with a 2-3-2 record and 10 points in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Concordia Wisconsin fell to 2-12-0 overall and 2-5-0 in the league.

The same two teams will face off again in Lake Forest's Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday night at 7:00. The Foresters need a victory or tie to retain the Border Cup, which is presented annually to the winner of the regular season series between the two teams.
