Defense Dominates on Windy Day at Beloit

Box Score

The Forester football team posted a 36-3 victory at Beloit College on Saturday and pulled into a tie for first place in the Midwest Conference standings.

The Lake Forest defense ruled the day, holding the home team to -27 total yards and zero first downs. Sophomore defensive tackle Jaylen Johnson tied for the team lead with four tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss.

The Bucaneers gained yardage on just nine of 33 offensive plays and moved the ball more than two yards just once in the contest.

The only turnover of the contest was turned in by Forester freshman linebacker Chris Clark, who registered his first career interception to end Beloit's final possession.

The Foresters ran the ball 53 times and possessed the ball for more than 41 minutes. Senior Armani Brown led the visitors with 65 yards on the ground and graduate student Damon Bonds added 45. Both ran for a touchdown, as did senior quarterback Tre Stewart.

Stewart and fellow senior signal-callers Vincent Wallace and Henry Bechok combined for 15 completions in 23 attempts for 104 yards. Stewart also connected with sophomore tight end Jake Kostryz on a 5-yard touchdown pass.

Freshman kicker Beckham Sonnabend made a pair of field goals and all four of his extra points attempts on the day. His seven field goals on the season are the third-most in program history, as are his 43 extra points.

The victory raised the Foresters' overall record to 8-1 and MWC mark to 7-1. Elsewhere in the league on Saturday, Monmouth College defeated Ripon College 39-32, creating a three-way tie atop the conference standings.

Lake Forest will close out the regular season at the University of Chicago next Saturday at noon. If all three first place teams are victorious next week, they will be co-champions and the league's tiebreakers will be used to decide which earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
