Women Second, Men Third at Carthage Classic

The Lake Forest swimming and diving team competed at the Carthage Classic Invite on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The women finished second overall, and the men placed third.

Wracking up a pair of first place finishes was sophomore Ally McCarthy. Hers was the first Forester victory of the weekend when she raced to a first place finish in the 1650-freestyle with a time of 17:44.47 during the meet's Thursday night session; with this time, McCarthy now ranks third in program history in the event. In the first 1000 of her mile, she posted a time of 10:45.18, which puts her fourth in team annals.

McCarthy also touched the wall first in the 500-freestyle with a winning time of 5:10.84. 

Also capturing victories in their respective events were senior captain Max Rowland and junior Violet Anderson. Rowland proved the fastest in the 400-individual medley when he touched the wall with a time of 4:08.80. Anderson's time of 58.36 was best in the 100-butterfly. 

Adding to her top finishes, McCarthy was second in the 100-breaststroke when she finished with a time of 1:08.97. Rowland also finished second in the 500-freestyle when he stopped the clock at 4:46.80, and Anderson had her own second-place finish in the 200-butterfly with a final time of 2:10.98. 

Senior captain Alec Pittman finished second in the 1650-freestyle with a time of 16:33.10; he out-touched the third-place finisher by .13 seconds.

Adding to the women's point total was sophomore Helena Blumenau. She raced to a second-place finish in the 200-individual medley with a time of 2:12.63; it was a race to the finish, and she managed to put her hand on the wall before the next finisher by .04 seconds. She also went on to touch the wall in third place with a time of 1:58.47 in the 200-freestyle.

On the women's side, there were a pair of relays that had finishes in the top three. Blumenau and Anderson were joined by sophomore Sarah McField and senior Kerry Mullen for the 200-medley; their combined time of 1:51.77 put them second in the field. Blumenau and Anderson were joined by McCarthy and senior Kylie Morgan for the 400-medley relay, which finished third in the event with a time of 4:06.36. 

This marked the last competition of the semester for the Foresters. They will compete again in the new year when they travel to Kalamazoo for the Illinois-Michigan Quadrangular on Saturday, January 15.
