Lake Forest Finishes Off Sweep of St. Olaf

Box Score

Junior forward Aaron O'Neill had a career-high four points as the Foresters hosted and defeated St. Olaf College 7-1 on Sunday.

O'Neill recorded an assist on the home team's first goal of the day, winning a faceoff to senior defenseman Connor Duncan, who passed to senior forward Austin Aksoy for the score. Aksoy struck from the right circle at 4:46 in the opening period for his team-high-tying fourth tally of the year.

The Foresters scored the first of two power play goals in the game with 2:03 remaining in the period. It was the third score of the season for sophomore defenseman Cullen Kane, who was assisted by a pair of juniors, forward Troy Nelson and defenseman Mark DerManulian.

The Oles trimmed their deficit in half with a power play goal of their own at 3:37 in the secod stanza but it turned out to be the visitors' only score of the contest.

Freshman David Cohen took over the team lead on goals with his fifth of the year at 14:06 in the second. O'Neill and freshman defenseman Scotty Nicholson assisted on the play. Lake Forest took a 4-1 lead into the locker room at the second intermission after O'Neill converted a power play opportunity with just .5 seconds on the clock. Senior defenseman Zach Feldman and sophomore forward Josh Giacomin set up the buzzer-beater.

Lake Forest tacked on three more goals in the final period, beginning with the first career score for freshman forward Drew Shields at the 8:55 mark. Junior forwards Kyler Magus and Joey Sardina assisted on the play before teaming up for the next goal, the second of the year and weekend for Sardina, at 11:31. O'Neill finished off the scoring with his fifth of the season at 18:27 with Giacomin picking up another assist.

The Foresters outshot their guests 35-18 in the contest and junior goaltender made 16 saves to improve to 7-1-1 with a .925 save percentage and 2.21 goals against average in 2019-20.

Lake Forest is now 7-2-1 on the year while St. Olaf fell to 1-9-0.

The Foresters will resume Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play next weekend against Lawrence University. The teams will face off in Appleton, Wisconsin, Friday night at 7:00 and at the same time Saturday in Lake Forest.
