Foresters Celebrate Homecoming with Second Straight Shutout

Box Score

Senior running back Nick Edlund ran for 215 yards and a pair of scores and senior wide receiver Chris Edomwande caught three touchdown passes as the Lake Forest College football team blanked visiting Cornell College 42-0 in its Homecoming game on Saturday.

Edlund averaged 8.6 yards on his 25 carries and added four receptions for 29 yards. He scored the game's first points on a 21-yard run on the final play of the opening quarter and reached the end zone from eight yards out to make the score 21-0 with 67 seconds to play before halftime.

Edomwande finished with 10 receptions for 110 yards and his scores came from 13, 14, and 18 yards out. It was his third consecutive appearance with at least 10 catches and 100 receiving yards and he now ranks sixth in program history with 116 career receptions and seventh with 1,550 yards. Edomwande is the 10th player in team annals with at least three touchdown catches in a single game.

The Foresters' final touchdown was the first in the career of senior quarterback Zach Wade, who kept the ball himself on an option play and found the end zone for a 4-yard run. Wade, who also completed his only pass attempt of the afternoon for seven yards, came on late in the game in relief of senior Jagan Cleary, who completed 21 of 35 passed for 191 yards and three touchdowns in the contest.

Junior kicker Michael Bounds converted each of his five extra point opportunities and freshman Brett Pine split the uprights after the home team's final touchdown of the contest. Bounds also average 38.5 yards on his two punts.

Junior linebacker Johnny Laponte and senior linebacker Charlie Timmerman led the Forester defense with seven tackles apiece. Senior linebacker Johnathan Tefel recovered a fumble and also ended up with the ball after junior Jordan McInerney blocked a punt.

Lake Forest out-gained Cornell 429-176 on the day and earned 27 first downs to the Rams' 12.

Saturday's shutout came a week after the Foresters' 35-0 victory at Knox College. The defense had not posted back-to-back shutouts since defeating Knox College 7-0 and the University of Chicago 27-0 in 1982.

Lake Forest is now 4-2 overall this season and undefeated in the MWC after posting lopsided victories in each of the team's two Midwest Conference contests. Cornell fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the league.

The Foresters will travel to Grinnell College next Saturday for a noon kickoff.
