Freshman Max Rowland and senior Lily McCarthy each racked up more than 100 points as the Lake Forest College men's and women's swimming and diving teams placed fourth at the A3 Carthage Classic over the weekend.
McCarthy was the runner-up in the 1650-freestyle Thursday night with a time of 18:06.06. She finished 17th in the 100-freestyle (56.95) and third in the 500-freestyle (5:17.41) on Friday and was the seventh-fastest swimmer in the 200-freestyle (2:00.60) on Saturday. Her 102 points were the 10th-highest total in the women's field while Rowland's 101 ranked ninth on the men's side. He was third in the 1650-freestyle (16:41.02) on Thursday, 13th in the 200-IM (2:03.30) and sixth in the 500-freestyle (4:52.51) on Friday, and 8th in Saturday's 400-IM (4:19.47).
Freshmen Susan Guo and Evan Weller also placed in the top 10 in three events at the meet. Guo swam in back-to-back events on Friday, finishing fourth in the 100-butterfly in 1:00.18 shortly before taking 10th place in the 500-freestyle with a time of 5:33.88. She added an 8th-place finish in Saturday's 200-butterfly, which she completed in 2:19.16. Weller was 10th in both of his events on Friday, the 200-backstroke (2:05.14) and 100-butterfly (54.94).
Among the Forester men senior David Bunting and junior Frederick Weichmann finished among the top 10 in a pair of events apiece. Bunting's time of 1:59.54 in Friday's 200-backstroke was good for seventh place and he was fifth in the 200-freestyle on Saturday in 1:46.15. Weichmann posted the eighth-best time (2:00.10) in Friday's 200-backstroke and was eighth in the 100-backstroke (54.98) on Saturday. Freshman Nathan Ulm chipped in with an eighth-place finish in the 100-butterfly on Friday with a time of 54.02 seconds.
The were four Foresters on the women's side who placed in the top 10 twice. Sophomore Ani Karagianis was sixth in the 1650-freestyle on Thursday with a time of 18:39.36 and fourth in Saturday's 400-IM in 4:56.72. Fellow sophomore Rachel Trevillian was the seventh swimmer to finish Friday's 200-IM (2:20.41) and the fourth to complete the 200-butterfly (2:16.44) on Saturday. Senior Brigit Dunne was the fifth swimmer to touch the wall in Friday's 200-backstroke, completing the eight lengths of the pool in 2:16.73, and she was sixth in Saturday's 100-backstroke in 1:01.89. Freshman Corynn Christjansen turned in both of her top-10 finishes on Saturday when she placed sixth in the 200-freestyle in 1:59.77 and ninth in the 50-freestyle with a time of 25.68 seconds.
The Forester men's relay teams placed fifth in both 200-yard events and sixth in the 400-yard races. The women were fifth in the 400-medley and seventh in the 200-freestyle on Friday before taking sixth place in the 200-medley and fifth in the 400-freestyle on Saturday.
The meet's diving competition was held at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where Forester junior Heath Ogawa swept the men's events. He tallied 480.00 points off the 1-meter board and 529.55 in the 3-meter competition. Sophomore Lizzie Johns was the runner-up off both boards on the women's side, finishing with career-best marks of 400.00 points in the 1-meter competition and 372.60 in the 3-meter event. Her 1-meter score met the qualificatin standard for competition at the NCAA Division III Regional Diving Meet. She will need to reach that mark one more time to join Ogawa at the regional meet.
The Carthage men and women finished first in the team standings, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater second, and Valparaiso University third.
It was the final meet of the fall semester for Lake Forest, which will compete next at Soka University during the team's training trip in early January.
