Box Score Sophomore guard Jordan Moran exploded for 26 points in the second half to lead the Forester men's basketball team to a 109-105 triumph over Grinnell College at home Friday night.
Moran's career-high 30 points and led all players in the contest and so did his 11 rebounds. He shot 11-for-13 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free throw line in his first career-double-double.
With the Foresters trailing 89-88, Moran took over with three consecutive layups, the last two set up by senior guard Mike Rueffer, whose nine assists on the night were also a career-high. Grinnell trimmed the margin to two points with 22.5 seconds left but Moran shot 8-for-8 from the foul line during the next 16 seconds to clinch the victory.
Lake Forest led by as many as 16 points in the first half after holding the Pioneers, who came into the game averaging 118.5 points per contest, scoreless for nearly five minutes. Grinnell chipped away at the deficit, however, and trailed by just four (50-46) at halftime.
The Foresters scored the first six points of the second half to take their lead back up to 10. A 14-2 Pioneer run, however, put the visitors on top for just the second time in the game. The first of six lead changes in the period came at the 15:24 mark and either team was ahead by more than six the rest of the way.
Lake Forest senior forward Jim Schick also recorded a double-double, the 28th of his career, with 22 points and 10 boards. He shot 8-for-10 from the field and added four assists. Sophomore forwards Danny Sotos and Chad Bauchan also reached double figures with 18 and 11 points, respectively. Rueffer played all but three minutes in the contest and turned the ball over just once while recording three steals and nine assists.
The home team made up for its 29 turnovers by shooting 68.8 percent from the field, knocking down 18 of 26 free throws, and out-rebounding the Pioneers 52-19. Grinnell shot nearly 44 percent from the floor and made 26 three-pointers in 62 attempts (41.9%).
The victory evened the Foresters' overall record on the season at 6-6 and improved their Midwest Conference mark to 4-3. Grinnell fell to 7-5 overall and is also 4-3 in the league.
