Foresters Compete at Phoenix Fall Classic

Lake Forest junior Emily Bowens finished among the top five in both backstroke events at the University of Chicago's Phoenix Fall Classic over the weekend. The Forester men placed third and the women 10th in the meet.

Bowens placed fourth in the 200-backstroke on Saturday with a time of 2:14.12 and fifth in Sunday's 100-backstroke in 1:02.56.

Sophomore Brigit Dunne was the next to finish in the women's 100-backstroke, posting a time of 1:03.49. The only other Forester women with a top-eight placing at the meet was freshman Rachael Purgerson, who was fifth in 1-meter diving with 304.25 points.

Lake Forest's only victories at the meet came in men's diving, where freshman Heath Ogawa swept the events with winning scores of 427.50 points off the 1-meter board and 433.15 in the 3-meter competition. Sophomore Matt Demirs added a third-place finish in the 1-meter event with 332.80 points.

Four different Forester men qualified for the A-final in a pair of invidual events. Senior Kristofer Korth was sixth in the 100-breaststroke on Saturday with a time of 1:00.38 and his third-place finish in Sunday's 200-breaststroke (2:11.22) was the highest placing by a Lake Forest swimmer on the weekend. Sophomore Ian Murphy finished seventh in the 500-freestyle (5:10.10) and sixth in the 400-IM (4:34.83). Fellow sophomore David Bunting was eighth in the 100-freestyle in 49.89 and his time of 1:48.56 in the finals of the 200-freestyel was good for seventh place. Junior Orion Huey touched the wall sixth in the 200-backstroke in 1:58.35 and placed seventh in the 50-freestyle with a time of 22.41 seconds.

Five additional Lake Forest men reached the A-final in one event. Senior Armel Cazedepats was sixth in the 500-freestyle (5:00.25) and sophomore Travis Johnson tied-for-sixth in the 100-freestyle (49.88) on Saturday. Juniors Ryan Keast and Josh Georgeff finished sixth (2:26.14) and eighth (2:33.53), respectively, in Sunday's 200-breaststroke and sophomore Jakobi McClellan placed eighth in the 100-backstroke (57.76).

Chicago's men and women finished first in the team standings. The Forester men scored 391.5 points, just 31.5 fewer than runner-up Illinois Institute of Technology, despite participating in just two of the meet's three days of competition.

Lake Forest will close out the fall semester at the Carthage Classic December 4-5.
