Foresters Finish Off Sweep of Marian

The Lake Forest College men's hockey team defeated visiting Marian University 4-1 Saturday night, finishing off a weekend sweep of the Sabres. Forester junior goaltender Leo Podolsky matched his career-high with 43 saves in the contest.

Podolsky made 13 saves in the first period, including the 1,000th of his career. He stopped all 19 of the Sabres shots on goal in the second period and 11 of 12 in the third. He improved to 9-2-3 with a .949 save percentage and 1.72 goals against average on the season.

Forester junior forward Ian Pichel scored the only goal of the opening period at the 10:48 mark. The unassited score was his third goal of the season.

The home team doubled its lead at the 8:58 mark of the second period on freshman forward Shawn Nelson's fourth goal of the year. Nelson was assisted by freshman forward Billy Kent.

Kent gave the Foresters a 3-0 lead two minutes and 40 seconds into the third period. He took a pass from Nelson and scored for the fifth time this season. The Sabres finally got on the scoreboard at the 9:20 mark and pulled their goaltender after a timeout with 2:43 on the clock. Forester senior forward Bobby Barrett found the empty net just 43 seconds later for his fifth goal of the year.

Lake Forest is now 9-3-5 overall this season and 7-2-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Marian fell to 6-11-0 overall and 2-8-0 in the league.

The Foresters will play another home-and-home series next weekend. They will host Concordia University Wisconsin at 7:00 Friday night before traveling to Mequon, Wisconsin, to face the same team at the same time on Saturday.
