The Lake Forest College men's hockey team had its season come to
an end Friday afternoon (March 5) in the semifinals of the Midwest
Collegiate Hockey Association's Harris Cup Four. The Foresters were
defeated 4-3 by Marian University and finished the year with an
overall record of 9-16-2. The Sabres advance to tomorrow
afternoon's title game with a mark of 20-6-0.
Lake Forest scored the game's first goal at the 2:48 mark of the
opening period. It came off the stick of senior Sean Farley
(Park Ridge, Ill./Utica College), who was assisted by junior Anthony
Ventura (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Lebanon Valley College). Marian
tied the score at 6:36 and took the lead at 11:12.
After a scoreless second period, the Sabres extended their lead
with a score at 7:32 in the third period and appeared to have put
the game out of reach with another goal at 18:49. The Foresters,
however, pulled the goalie and cut the deficit to 4-2 on senior Justin
Taylor's (Sun Valley, Idaho/Walpole Stars) team-high 12th score
of the season with 52 seconds to play. He was assisted by Farley
and freshman Thomas Bark
(Toronto, Ontario/Streetsville Derbys). After a Marian penalty,
Farley netted his second goal of the contest and 11th this year at
19:57. Bark and senior Peter
Pfeffer (Farmington Hills, Mich./Walpole Stars) assisted on the
power play score. Taylor actually put one final shot on goal in the
game's final second but the Sabre goalie saved it to preserve the
victory.
The Foresters were out-shot 38-27 in the contest and freshman
goalie Austin Erney
(New Ringgold, Pa./Vermont Academy) tallied 34 saves.
Bark finished the season as the team's leader with 28 points and 21
assists. Taylor and Pfeffer were next with 26 points.
In addition to Farley, Taylor, and Pfeffer, the Foresters will lose
fellow seniors Adam Love
(Durham, Ontario/Elmira Sugar Kings) and Nick Ghidina
(Pekin, Ill./Wichita Falls Wildcats) to graduation in May.
