The Forester men's hockey team fell 7-3 at Milwaukee School of
Engineering on Sunday (February 28), leaving the teams tied in
their Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association two-game quarterfinal
series. Lake Forest then won the resulting mini-game 2-1 in
overtime to advance to next weekend's (March 5-6) Harris Cup Four
at Adrian College. The result and statistics of the mini-game do
not count so the Foresters fell to 9-15-2 on the season and the
Raiders finished the year with a 14-11-2 record.
Lake Forest took an early lead in the mini-game when senior Justin
Taylor (Sun Valley, Idaho/Walpole Stars) scored at the 3:27
mark. M.S.O.E. pulled its goalie late in the contest, which was
supposed to last just 20 minutes, and scored with only 33 seconds
remaining. The teams returned to the ice for a 20-minute
sudden-death overtime period that finally ended when Forester
freshman Thomas Bark
(Toronto, Ontario/Streetsville Derbys) lit the lamp with 6:16 left
on the clock. Bark was assisted by junior Jordan
Cutler (Highland Park, Ill./Lebanon Valley College) and
freshman Justin
Crawford (Cobourg, Ontario/Peterborough Stars).
Forester freshman goaltender Austin Erney
(New Ringgold, Pa./Vermont Academy) stopped 12 of 13 shots on goal
in the first 20 minutes of the mini-game and all nine he faced in
the overtime period.
The Raiders never trailed during their victory earlier in the day.
The home team scored one minute and 50 seconds into the contest and
doubled its lead at 9:13. Lake Forest senior Adam Love
(Durham, Ontario/Elmira Sugar Kings) scored his 10th goal of the
year at 16:27 with Bark earning an assist. The Foresters were
out-shot 16-4 in the period and trailed 2-1 after 20 minutes of
play.
M.S.O.E. scored on the power play at the 2:32 mark of the second
period and added an even-strength goal at 5:33. The score was still
4-1 in favor of the Raiders at the second intermission and the home
team had an 11-8 edge in shots during the period.
Foresters freshman Tyler Hauer
(Toronto, Ontario/Pickering Panthers) scored for the second time
this season at the 3:59 mark of the second period. He was assisted
by Cutler and freshman Jake
DellaValle (Venetia, Pa./Stouffville Spirit). Sophomore Ben Finney
(Pontypool, Ontario/Robert Morris University) then pulled the
visitors to within one on a power play goal at 8:38. His second
score of the season was assisted by Taylor and Bark. The Raiders,
however, converted a power play opportunity at 11:16, scored again
at 15:10, and closed out the scoring with another power play goal
at 18:07. The home team put 11 more shots on goal in the final
period, two more than the Foresters.
Lake Forest will face off against Marian University in the
semifinals of next weekend's (March 5-6) Harris Cup Four at Adrian
College. They will play at 3:00 (EST) Friday afternoon and Adrian
will host Lawrence University at 7:00. The winners will play at
3:00 Saturday afternoon for the Harris Cup and the league's
automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
