The Forester men's hockey team registered a 6-2 victory at
Lawrence University Saturday night (January 9). Lake Forest is now
4-8-0 overall this season and 4-4-0 in Midwest Collegiate Hockey
Association play. The Vikings fell to 6-5-0 overall and suffered
their first MCHA loss after posting victories in their first five
league games.
The Foresters were out-shot 17-3 in the opening period but neither
team was able to score.
Lake Forest freshman Mike Rubino (Woodbridge, Ontario/St. Michael's
Buzzers) broke the scoreless tie with a power play goal at the 6:18
mark of the second period. Senior Peter Pfeffer (Farmington Hills,
Mich./Walpole Stars) and freshman Robert Bote (Eching,
Germany/Smith Falls Bears) were each credited with an assist.
Rubino and freshman Jake DellaValle (Venetia, Pa./Stouffville
Spirit) then assisted on fellow freshman Jordan Cutler's (Highland
Park, Ill./Lebanon Valley College) first career goal at 8:53.
Lawrence cut the lead in half with a score at 10:09 but Forester
senior Justin Taylor (Sun Valley, Idaho/Walpole Stars) netted his
fifth and sixth goal of the season later in the period. Bote and
freshman Thomas Bark (Toronto, Ontario/Streetsville Derbys)
assisted on Taylor's first score at 15:40 and his second, scored
with 1:29 remaining on the clock, was set up by DellaValle and
freshman Marc Rubino (Woodbridge, Ontario/St. Michael's Buzzers).
Both teams put 13 shots on goal in the period.
A goal by Lawrence at the 4:32 mark of the third period gave the
home team some momentum and trimmed the Foresters' lead to 4-2.
Lake Forest, however, regained its three-goal advantage at the
13:28 mark. Despite being shorthanded and facing an extra skater
when the Vikings pulled their goalie, Mike Rubino netted his second
goal of the game and third this season. Twin brother Marc Rubino
closed out the scoring at 18:05 off assists by Bark and freshman
Trent Brown.
Lake Forest freshman goaltender Brendan Sullivan (Fall River,
Mass./Aurora Tigers) turned away 38 of 40 shots on goal on the
night.
The Foresters will play a home-and-home series with Concordia
University Wisconsin next weekend (January 15-16). The teams will
face off at 7:30 both Friday night in Lake Forest and Saturday
evening in Mequon, Wisconsin.
