Foresters Mourn the Death of Bob Tiernan '49

4/28/2026 9:30:00 AM

Lake Forest College Athletics is saddened by the recent passing of Bob Tiernan '49.

Bob came to Lake Forest College as a student in 1945 and was a member of the Forester football and basketball teams. He was also extremely active on campus, serving as Vice President of Phi Pi Epsilon and participating in Homecoming Committee, intramural sports, Stentor Committee, Forester Committee, and Economics Club.

Bob enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves and served on active duty in the mid-1950s as an air intelligence officer. He held a variety of intelligence unit commands in the Naval Reserves over the next three decades and received the Navy Legion of Merit upon retirement in 1987 while holding the rank of rear admiral. Bob was also an extremely successful corporate attorney until his retirement in 1990 and served as a part-time consultant thereafter.

An extremely generous and loyal supporter of the College and Forester Athletics, Bob was a member of the Alumni Board in the early 1970s and the Board of Trustees throughout the 1980s. He has served on multiple National Campaign Committees, helped the College host numerous events, and returned to campus for nearly every Homecoming since he was a student. In recognition of his service to the College, he received the Distinguished Service Citation in 1994.

In terms of contributions to athletics, there have been many, but none more important than Bob's spirit and personal commitment to helping Lake Forest College achieve high levels of success. One of the most notable of his efforts has been the development of the Tiernan Trophy Room, an area in the Sports and Recreation Center highlighting the history of Forester Athletics. Bob has also played a valuable role in several other Athletic Department initiatives, including the renovation of the Dau Room, Farwell Field, and the Sports and Recreation Center.

Bob is survived by his wife Marilyn and they have four sons, two of which attended and played sports at the College.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, May 1, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Danville, California and a celebration of life will be held on Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 23 at noon at the Veteran's Building in Danville, California.
